Update Availability of High School during winter break

I spoke at length to Asst Superintendent of Commack schools, Laura Newman.  She explained that due to State cutbacks (more like reneging) on promised aide to the school for this year (they've already withheld $220,000 in promised State aide this month, and the district expects to lose more than $2,000,000 in promised State aide, for the rest of the year), they're forced to cut back on programs and school availability.  That's why the school is closed the two weekends of the break.  They are open M-F during the holiday week, which doesn't help us much because the team will be at the HHH tournament on the 28th & 29th, and the Coach would like to give the boys a rest day on the 30th, after the tournament.

The school can't allow off-duty police officers or other volunteers to provide security, to keep the school open those two weekends.  That is in violation of their collective bargaining agreement with the custodial union, since the custodians would be the ones to man the school, at those times.

She is also not able to accept the Claw Club's offer to pay for the custodial/security staff to keep the school open for the team's weekend practices because as I understand it, it's not lawful for the district to accept the public's funds if they're earmarked only for a special interest.

I think we may have exhausted every attempt to have the practices at the school, and the CATZ facility may be the best we can do.  I've provided follow-up to the Coach.

I wish that I had better news to report.  However, on a bright note, the Claw Club parents have been as supportive as ever.  Ms. Newman told me that she's received many e-mails from our parents on this subject, and she's responded to everyone

Sincerely,
Nancy Troisi

Letter to Parents HS Wrestling

 Hello, Parents:

I have seen many of you at the wrestling team's first tournament (Bayshore) and at our first home meet, last night.  If you've been able to attend either event, you know that our wrestlers are off to a fantastic start, and we look forward to a very exciting season as the team goes up against schools in their league.

Unfortunately, I've just learned that the Commack School District has decided to close the high school over the December break, leaving the team with nowhere to practice, during this time.  Mr. Thode is working with Coach DeSario, and it looks like the team may be able to practice a couple of those days at CATZ in Commack.  However, the facility is too small to accommodate the entire team, and this may impact whether all of the wrestlers will be able to attend the tournament(s) scheduled during the break.

This is all extremely disappointing and discouraging, both for the coaches and the boys.  In my opinion, two of the many things that set the Commack HS wrestlers apart from the others are their sense of teamwork and commitment as a group to their wrestling work.  As you've heard at the "meet the Coach" nights, Coach DeSario works throughout the season to have the boys practice and wrestle together, as much as possible.  This not only benefits the younger wrestlers (who are then able to watch the older wrestlers technique, skill, work ethic, commitment, and teamwork), but also gives the upperclassmen a chance to support the younger wrestlers and to show leadership.  I believe that this is a true source of pride and commitment, for all of our wrestlers.  For you parents of younger boys, I can tell you that the wrestlers' work on this team will help them to develop into responsible, self-confident, reliable young men (I have seen this in my own son, over the last couple of years).

It is critical for the team's success this season for the wrestlers to continue daily practice throughout the December/holiday break, and for the team to practice/wrestle all together.

Therefore, I am asking the parents of the Commack HS wrestlers to send e-mails, letters, and/or phone calls to Dr. Feltman, Ms. Newman, and Mr. Thode, to request that they reconsider the decision to close the high school over the break.  We should let the Commack administration know that we are extremely displeased with their decision, so that they will reconsider leaving the school open for the wrestling team, during the break.  To have the greatest impact, please do this as soon as possible.

The Claw Club has been a tremendous source of support for the Commack HS Wrestlers.  We've received many acknowledgments from school personnel, parents, and local businesses with respect to the enthusiasm and backing that we provide for our boys.  Please help continue that spirit, and send your e-mails to the Commack administration!
